Mookite

Published: June 16, 2009
Types: Mookite - which has many spellings, including "mookaite" and "moukaite" - is a jasper in shades of red, yellow, and brown. It is also referred to as "hicorite" and "mook jasper."

History: Mookite is considered a healing stone, particularly in Australia. Many believe this gemstone reduces insecurities and aids in decision making. It is said to protect against bad relationships and situations. Mookite is also used to treat stomachaches, hernias, and water retention.

Origins: Mookite was first found in western Australia. The gemstone gets its name from Mooka Station, a sheep farm on the Kennedy Range where large quantities were discovered.

Treatments: Mookite beads are generally not dyed because their natural colors are so vibrant. Mookite is sometimes carved to create beads of a uniform color. It can be faceted only after undergoing a heat treatment.

Availability: Though it is mined only in Australia, mookite beads are widely available in different finishes and cuts.

Care: Because mookite is composed of layers of sediment, cracks or soft spots are common along the layers. Care must be taken when carving or polishing so the stone doesn't develop deeper fissures or crack.
