Amazonite
Published: June 16, 2009 Types: Amazonite is a mostly opaque, pale blue-green stone with white, yellow, or grey inclusions. Russian amazonite has a deeper green color and is sometimes mistaken for turquoise. The stone gets its name from the Amazon River, though no deposits have been found there.
History: It is considered to have healing properties, improving your skin, clarifying your thoughts, and enhancing your marriage and social interactions.
Origins: Since 1876, Colorado has been the most significant source of amazonite. Other sources include Brazil, Russia, Australia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Madagascar, and Namibia.
Treatments: Amazonite is rarely enhanced.
Availability: Amazonite is available as carved pieces and cabochons. You can also find a variety of bead shapes, like faceted tubes, twists, and double-drilled squares.
Care: Because amazonite is somewhat soft, store it separately from other jewelry to avoid scratches. Clean it in warm, soapy water. Never use steam or chemicals.
