Gemstone Spotlight

Emerald

Published: June 20, 2007
Types: "Emerald" means "green gemstone." The highest-quality stones are a transparent grass green. Transparent stones are rare, but inclusions indicate the stone's authenticity.

History: Many Indian maharajas and maharanis, Incas, and Aztecs revered emeralds. Cleopatra also had a large collection. The stone is believed to drive away evil and to bring wisdom by strengthening memory and intelligence. It is the traditional May birthstone and 55th wedding anniversary stone.

Origins: Colombia, Brazil, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are major sources of emeralds.

Treatments: Many emeralds are enhanced with oil or resin.

Availability: This precious stone can be costly (exceptional emeralds rival diamonds in price), but beads and cabochons are more affordable.

Care: Avoid subjecting jewelry to extreme temperatures. Clean an emerald with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use warm, soapy water - it can remove the oils used to treat the stone. Every few years, have a professional jeweler re-oil the stone.
