10 easy steps to designing your own wedding jewelryby Stacy Werkheiser On December 25, 2008, I got engaged! Shortly thereafter, my fiancé and I set our wedding date as June 5, 2010. Now the big day is right around the corner and planning is well underway, underfoot, overwhelming, and over-the-moon fun!
I can't deny that working for BeadStyle magazine is my greatest creative outlet, but planning a wedding has become a close second. This is especially true since I've gotten it into my head to design my own bridal necklace and earrings. With a few months before the big day, I have plenty of time for this endeavor, but the real question is, do I have what it takes?
The basics of jewelry making are old hat to me - I can crimp crimp beads and wrap loops with the best of them. But I still struggle with designing my own jewelry. BeadStyle editors hear this all the time from readers: How do I choose colors that look good together? How do I know what's wrong with a design that isn't "working"? Where should I look for inspiration? How do I channel my inspiration into jewelry?
And if I may add to that list, what the heck is inspiration anyway?
Over the next 10 Mondays, I will be learning the answers to these questions the hard way - through trial and error as I make my very own wedding jewelry set - and sharing my insights with you. I won't sugar-coat a thing, admitting to all my mistakes, foibles, and faux pas. But lucky for you, I'll be equally transparent about my successes. By the end of this series, you'll get to see my final necklace and earrings designs, and I will publish step-by-step instructions for them in BeadStyle's upcoming special issue, Pearls. And because I know you love projects, projects, projects, I'll also show you other beaded accessories and gifts you can make for the big day.
Whether you're a bride-to-be or her appointed designer, I invite you to make this journey with me every Monday for the next 10 weeks. We'll laugh, we'll cry, but in the end we'll string our way to the altar.
Coming next week… BrideStyle #1: What is inspiration and where do you find it when making wedding jewelry?
