Published: September 19, 2011 These lightweight metal charms are special because they're mermaids, but it's hand torching that makes them super special. The heat brings out the greens, blues, purples, oranges and golds. They come from Joan Miller, joanmiller.com.

Most of the beads from Silk Road Treasures come from Afghanistan. Thier hand carved beads usually have a matte finish — think Afghan jade like serpentine or new jade. Silk Road Treasures also carry wood beads, and Roman glass beads. I was drawn to their booth because of these brass, silver, and copper findings. They too are hand torched.

It's pretty amazing the deep colors you can produce with a simple butane torch. The heat oxidizes and blends the pigments, creating patterns and causing chemical reactions. If you like the colors that torch firing produces, consider purchasing some of these findings, or learn more and do it yourself.
