Spring 2011 jewelry trends Top styles are bold and blue
by Naomi Fujimoto
Published: March 25, 2011 During my visit to the winter JA New York Show, two jewelry trends were impossible to miss.
First: Big is in. Still! Jewelry this season is bigger than ever:
• At Atelier Minyon, check out the bejeweled skulls, daggers, and claws.
• Misti Martin combines sterling bezel-set druzy and gemstones in one-of-a-kind bibs.
• Katie Decker and Syna string big beaded tassels in earrings and necklaces. Syna's Paris collection features statement earrings: rubellite and rock-crystal cabochons linked to look like the Eiffel Tower (shown at right).
• Filigreed and open metalwork pieces are still delicate, but they're larger in scale. - In the Showstoppers section of Ray Griffiths' website, check out his domed rings set with tiny emeralds and sapphires. - Katie Decker designs pendants, cuffs, and earrings with open leaf, vine, and lotus motifs.
• Saundra Messinger adds tiny diamonds for texture in wide, organically shaped ring bands.
• Zsa Zsa Jewels offers bezel-set agate slices in cuffs and chokers.

The second trend: If you opt for only one color, go with blue. (And add some green.)
Spring shades of aquamarine, blue topaz, chrysoprase, green amethyst, and peridot are a cheerful change after winter's grey and black jewelry.
• Elizabeth Showers sets blue topaz over mother of pearl for a pale, iridiscent sheen (shown at right). She also has a silver collection with enameled pieces in shades of seafoam, teal, and turquoise.
• Gold rings with gumdroppy blue or green chalcedony are popular at Jaded.
• At Michou, Michele Sonner favors shades of green amethyst, aquamarine, and blue topaz.
• Ferraccia's leather cuffs come in bright shades of aqua and kelly green.
• The top sellers at Rocky’s Designs are blue and green stones — particularly aqua quartz, blue tourmaline, and moss aquamarine.

One new designer whose work I love: Marie-Lise Lachapelle. She preserves orchids in resin, trims them in gold, and attaches chain in gorgeous necklaces and earrings.
She also makes molds and casts metal flowers in huge cocktail rings. I hadn't planned on shopping this year, but once I tried on the orchid ring, I could not put it down.
Check out Marie-Lise's Facebook page for previews of her new collections.
