Steampunk Q&A with Irina Miech
Inspired by a love of nature, artist works blooms into design
Published: September 28, 2010 Irina owns the Eclectica bead store in Brookfield, Wis., and has authored several books on jewelry design. She loves exploring unusual components and much of her inspiration comes from nature, so it's not surprising she plated blooms in her steampunk design.

Would you call steampunk your preferred style? I usually work with a variety of components, including natural and organic elements. I like experimenting with different styles, and I found it interesting to combine the steampunk with the organic.
When did you first start to create steampunk pieces? Melanie Brooks’ set of steampunk projects in February 2008 inspired me. The look of the style and its possibilities intrigued me, and I became interested in creating my own interpretation.

What do you love about steampunk?
I love that it
lends itself well to using a variety of metal components. Also, the
steampunk style is very versatile — it can be incorporated into nearly
any style. Its eclectic look appeals to me, especially because I find
the juxtaposition of the hardware and gears with organic, natural
elements to be an interesting mix. |
